Dr. Professor Rebecca Ma’m

Rebecca is once again in India, teaching in the law school in Pune, and loving her busman’s holiday. She is working with hundeeds of students and teaching a full range of materials.  She wrote yesterday that our dear street dog Parker had passed away, but that she did find Ellinore’s other feral friend, Ice Cube, who is apparently still plying the streets of Pune.

Aparna Kalita, or "Apu" as we know her, Rebecca, and two Indian colleagues

Students at the school call her Dr. Professor Rebecca Ma’m, or Rebecca Mam. And Apu, no longer a student, is on the scene, as is our friend Sujata, whose young daughter is thriving. Rebecca brought bilingual children’s books and disposable diapers to India. Sujata speaks more languages than I can remember, and so the child will surely be immersed in the sounds of Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, English, German, and the other languages Sujata has.

What is our favorite law professor doing during her three week stay? Here is a draft work plan. (Bear in mind that in India life is a draft, and people are much more graceful and at ease with contingencies than those of us in the US will ever be.)

Rebecca tells me she is also geting out for walks on the tekdi, green and lush now that the monsoons have done their annual magic, and the city streets, where India goes on in its wonderful way.

I’m missing Rebecca something fierce. I am also missing India, I realize, as I listen to the happenings there.
